April 7: Win

Scripture Lesson: Deuteronomy 1:29-33

Today is the birthday of one of the very first great managers in baseball history, John McGraw of the New York Giants. McGraw was known for his fiery passion for the game and for his strong desire to win. He said, ”In playing and managing, the game of baseball is only fun for me when I am out in front and winning. The men who lose gracefully and easily with sportsmanship and easygoing methods are alright. But once a team of mine is on the field, I want it to fight.”

The setting of our Scripture lesson is just after the return of a group of spies who had been sent to check out the Promised Land. Ten out of twelve said there was no way Israel could conquer the land: the people were too big, and the cities too well fortified. They were right in believing they could not win on their own, but wrong in failing to trust that God could help them win. Two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, said, “Let’s go and God will grant us the victory. The writer reminded the people of the faithfulness God had shown in delivering them from Egypt. God could deliver a big win! The only two men of the twelve who tasted victory were Joshua and Caleb.

  1. What victories in life do you think can’t be won?

  2. What is the folly of trying to go it alone?

  3. Where should our trust be if we are to live victorious lives?

John McGraw loved for his teams to win, and God want us to win in life. That can only be done when we trust in Him to go with us to win the victories of life.
