By Sharon Madison Being a sideline participant in the competitive world of sports can be a hard life. As Christians, we are to love and forgive all. But when our team faces competition on the field, sometimes the outcome doesn’t seem fair. Sometimes the end result of a difficult confrontation on the diamond does not make us feel rejoiceful. Often, as wives of coaches, we become defensive of our husbands and their position in the competitive world of sports.
So, do we ask for our success on the field and the failure of the opposing team? How do you pray?
There were times, as the wife of an SEC coach, that my attitude towards the opposing team was not wholesome. (Sharon is happily married to Keith Madison, who was the head coach at the University of Kentucky for 25 years.) There were times that I visited with the wives who traveled with their husband’s team. Many of us had become friends through our husbands. We would socialize amicably until the game started; then we would separate to our different corners to support our husband and his team. It was during these special times that the outcome of the game played second fiddle to the camaraderie of friends. There was still tough competition on the playing field, but the strong thread of friendship put the pressure of competition in perspective. So, how do we pray? Matthew 6:8 tells us that our Lord knows our hurts and needs even when we don’t realize them. He is always there for us.
Baseball has been a very important part of my life, and now, as a bystander looking back, I can see more clearly God’s plan for Keith and me from the very beginning of our career. My prayer today is for my friends who are still in the competitive field of sports. God has given us all a gift; it’s important that we recognize His blessing and work with it to the glory of our Lord.
