February 10: Connected to Christ

Scripture Lesson: John 15:5

Today is the birthday of St. Louis Cardinal, Lance Berkman. John 15:5, Berman’s favorite Bible verse, emphasizes man’s dependency on Jesus. Berkman says, “Anything we do good apart from the power and the name of Jesus Christ – not that it doesn’t count – but from a spiritual standpoint, it’s not edifying. When we do good works outside the power of Christ, we end up getting the glory when the whole point is for God to get the glory.” Berkman takes very seriously his role as a Christian ball player to use his influence and status for God and his purpose.

Today’s Scripture lesson paints for us a very vivid picture of how to be a successful Christian. Too many times we think we can do it in our own strength. This verse reminds us that if we remain connected to Jesus like a branch to a vine, we can produce much fruit for the Kingdom of God. But if choose to go it alone without Him, we can do nothing! Today, may we realize that being connected to Jesus enables us to great things for Him. As a Christian that should be our aim every day!

  1. Describe a time you felt really connected to Christ and were able to do something for Him.

  2. What happens to a branch when it is cut off from a vine?

  3. What does it mean to you to bear fruit?

Lance Berkman is such a positive influence for Christ in the baseball community because he abides in Christ. Think of what we could accomplish if we did the same thing!
