29: Passion
Scripture Lesson: John 10:11-18
Today is the birthday of Johnny Leonard Roosevelt “Pepper” Martin.
Pepper Martin was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals “Gas House Gang” of the
30’s and 40’s. He was the catalyst in the Cardinals upset of the favored
Philadelphia A’s in the 1931 World Series by hitting .500 and setting a record
with 12 base hits in a series. Martin played the game with a passion and love
for the game that was evident to all who watched him play.
In our scripture today, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd. He
loves his sheep and is willing to give up his own life for his sheep. The good
Shepherd has a passion when it comes to caring for the sheep. He knows his
sheep and his sheep know Him. Jesus passionately cares about his sheep (us) so
much so He was willing to freely lay down His own life. We are indeed blessed
to be loved that much and watched over that much by the Good Shepherd who loves
us so!
-
How does
a shepherd care for his sheep?
-
How does
that relate to how Jesus cares for us?
-
What
does this passage say about Jesus’ love for us?
Jesus as the Good Shepherd loves us and cares for us with a passion
that cost Him His life.
