February 6: Pinch Hitter

Scripture Lesson: Romans 3:22-24

Today is the birthday of Smokey Burgess, a North Carolina native who is considered one of the greatest pinch hitters of all time. Burgess made the 1963 National League All-Star team strictly as a pinch hitter. Burgess, a former catcher, lost much of his speed in his last few years, and set an American League record for the most at bats without scoring a run in 1967. Burgess often got on base, but was replaced with a pinch runner after every hit.

Paul reminds us in the book of Romans that “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” But by the redemption of Jesus we are freed from the penalty of sin. It is God’s grace, freely given and never earned! Jesus “pinch hit” for you and me by going to the cross to die for our sins. No one else could have taken our place, but Jesus did just that. Smokey Burgess could hit and made a good living by being a pinch hitter. Jesus Christ made the opportunity of us having a good life by His “pinch hitting” for our sins and mistakes!

  1. How did Jesus pinch hit for us?

  2. Thank God for Jesus going to bat for our sins and mistakes.

  3. How can we live our lives for Him?

Smokey Burgess was a great pinch hitter, one of the all-time greats, yet there is no greater pinch hitter in life than Jesus Christ.

I get that perhaps Duncan isn't the best in the field, but the DH right now is hntitig like crap. Why would Torre not pinch hit for Damon in the 9th? I'm not sure he would have hit a 3 run home run or anything, but he couldn't have done any WORSE than hntitig into a DP.I'm sure I'm not saying anything new. Just had to get that out there.
