Scripture Lesson: Luke 9:46-48

In the 1984 Hall of Fame voting, Luis Aparicio, Don Drysdale, and Harmon Killebrew are elected to the Hall. Killebrew who died in 2011, is known as the Minnesota Twins greatest player. He hit 573 HRs, drove in 1,584 runs, and got 2,086 hits. Not only was Killebrew great on the field he was even better off the field as one of the most respected men to have ever played the game by teammates and opponents alike. His number 3 is retired by the Twins.

Our Scripture lesson today deals with an argument that breaks out among the disciples. They were arguing about which one of them was going to be the greatest. Jesus knew what was in their hearts , so as he often did, Jesus used an object lesson to teach them. He took a little child and had the boy stand beside Him. Jesus told the disciples that whoever welcomes this child, welcomes me. Then Jesus makes His point, the least among you is the greatest. True greatness comes from humility and being a servant. One of the things those who knew Harmon Killebrew would say about him was he was always willing to help. Greatness is not about what we amass, it is about what we give away by becoming like one of the “least of these”. I don’t know about you, but I would be happy to be seen as great in the eyes of Jesus than being great in what this world describes as being great!

1. Would Jesus describe us as being great in His eyes? Why or Why not?
2. What does being like a little child have to do with greatness?
3. How can we be great in the eyes of Jesus today?

It is very easy to get caught up in what this world deems to be greatness. Today let’s live greatness out by serving god and serving others!
