14: A Great Teacher
Scripture Lesson: John 14:23-24
Today is the birthday of former U.S. Olympic Gold Medal-winning
shortstop, Gary Green. Along with his teammates, Green won the gold in the 1984
games in Los Angeles. Green had a five-year major league career as a reserve
middle infielder. In all my years observing the game, Gary Green is one of the
greatest teachers of the game I have ever seen. Green has managed in the Tigers
and Pirates organizations and currently serves in the Pirates organization as a
roving infield coordinator. Gary has the unique ability to teach the
fundamentals of the game as well as teaching young men how to mature in life.
In his quiet unassuming way, Green has taught many men how to succeed in baseball
both on and off the field.
In today’s Scripture lesson, Jesus is speaking to his disciples on
the eve of His death. One might say he was preparing them for their final
exams. The disciples had spent three years with Jesus learning all the things
he had taught them. Finally Jesus wrapped up all His teaching in these short
verses. “If you love me, you will obey my teachings.” God will dwell with those
who obey Jesus’ teachings! The greatest teacher who ever lived was Jesus. When
we want to learn how to live happy, successful, and productive lives we must
consult the Master. The gospels are full of the blueprints for a successful
Christian life. The key for loving Jesus is simply doing what he says!
-
How can we
learn more about the teachings of Jesus?
-
What are
the keys for God to dwell with us?
-
How much
do we love Jesus?
If I want to learn more about becoming a great middle infielder, I
am going to Gary Green. If I want to learn about being a better Christian, I am
going to learn all I can about Jesus. Then I am going to obey and love!
