January 9: Love

Scripture Lesson: Psalm 107:43

In 1989 two all-time greats were elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame, Cincinnati catcher Johnny Bench and Boston’s Carl Yastremski. Bench received 96.4% of the votes: only Ty Cobb and Hank Aaron had received a higher percentage. Bench won 10 straight Gold Gloves and hit 348 career home runs. Yaztremski was the last player to hit for the Triple Crown, in 1967. He finished his career with 452 HRs and 3,308 hits. Both men played their entire careers with one team and were greatly loved in their cities. Bench and Yastremski played the game hard every day and were known for giving everything they had, endearing them to the local fans of Cincinnati and Boston.

As much as Bench and Yastremski were loved in their careers, that love pales in comparison to the great love God has for us. In our Scripture lesson today, the Psalmist reminds us to “consider the great love of God.” Have we ever taken the time to just stop and think about how much God loves us? Psalm 107 reminds the people of Israel just how much God has done for them in the past and how He is always there for them. The same holds true for us today. God is there for us and no one loves us like God loves us. He loves us so much, He even knows how many hairs are on our heads.  Wisdom comes from realizing just how much we are loved by God!

  1. How has God shown his great love for you?

  2. How can we show God today, we love Him?

  3. Stop and thank God right now for His love for you.

As we consider God’s love for us today, may we also consider our love for Him. Spend some time today with the One who loves you more than you could ever imagine and serve Him!
