May 28: Winning at Life

Scripture Lesson: Romans 12:1-2

Today is the birthday of former Major League player and current manager Kirk Gibson. Gibson was well known for playing the game with intensity and passion. He always gave everything he had on every play during his 17-year playing career. In 1988, Gibson hit one of the most dramatic home runs in World Series history, a game winner off A’s closer Dennis Eckersley. Gibson, who was the inspirational leader of the team, was battling leg injuries and could barely walk as he approached the plate as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth. His inspirational game-winning home run propelled the Dodgers to go on and win the series over the highly favored A’s.

In today’s text, Paul gave the church at Rome the key to winning at life. We are to present ourselves to God as a living sacrifice as an act of worship. Paul calls us not to conform to the things of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Then we will know what God’s will is for our lives. To win at life, we must give ourselves totally to God, allowing God to guide our thoughts and our lives. We must not let the world dictate to us, but we must change the world for God by allowing Him to direct our lives through His will.

  1. What does it mean to offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice?

  2. How can we make a difference for God in this world?

  3. How can we win at life?

Doesn’t the One who sent His Son to this world for us deserve our all? If we’re willing to give our all, we will be a winner at life!
