May 9: Women of Faith

Scripture Lesson: 2 Timothy 1:5-7

On this date in 2010, Dallas Braden threw the 19th perfect game in baseball history, a 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The 26-year-old left hander was especially proud that his grandmother was present: his gem of a game occurred on Mother’s Day. Braden’s grandmother had cared for him after his Mom died of cancer during his senior year at Stagg High School in Stockton, California.

We are introduced to two women of faith in today’s Scripture lesson. Timothy’s faith was first developed by the influence of his grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice. During his childhood, they must have told him the stories of faith of the Old Testament and of God’s love for him: what a blessing that must have been! I can remember my own mother – also named Lois – who would put me in her lap and read Bible stories to me. Some of those are still my favorites today. It is indeed a blessing to have godly women in our lives that share the love God has for us and bring us up in His Word.

  1. Who are the most influential women in your life from a faith standpoint?

  2. What made them so special?

  3. Take time today to call those women if possible and thank them for helping you to grow closer to God.

What a special day it was for Dallas Braden to pitch a perfect game on Mother’s Day. What a special day for us to say “Thank you” to those women who have made a Kingdom difference in our lives!
