Niagara Power Charging Up For 2013 Season

It’s that time of year again. The winter sports seasons are coming to a crescendo and the boys of summer are itching to get onto the field.

The Niagara Power season is played the end of May through the end of July.
Coming off two consecutive playoff appearances and entering its seventh season in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, FCA Niagara Power, a subsidiary FCA Baseball team based in Niagara Falls, N.Y., has already begun to recruit its team and set up host families for the summer. The Niagara Power season doesn’t officially start until the end of May, but general manager and FCA staff member Cal Kern and his wife Sherrie have been busy for months preparing for the 2013 season.

“At this point, we have about three quarters of our roster filled,” said Cal Kern. “But we are still looking for a few more players to complete this already stellar group of young men.”

Cal does most of the recruiting, but he also relies heavily on coaches who are familiar with the program and past players who know the caliber of players they need from an athletic and spiritual perspective.

The season is designed to be a time for the young men to grow and develop body, mind and spirit. Niagara Power offers individual practice sessions for the men to develop various aspects of their game, spiritual training with FCA Chaplains and area pastors, team Bible studies, and community service opportunities.

“The guys stay pretty busy throughout the season, but we try to make sure that it’s not all work and no play,” Sherrie Kern said. “On rainout days, Cal and I like to invite the players over to visit and enjoy some dinner. The guys usually end up calling me ‘Momma K’ by the end of the season!”

The Kerns thoroughly enjoy getting to know their players each season, but this year is especially exciting for them.

“Since we’ve been doing this for seven seasons, we’re at the point where we’ve been blessed to see young men start out as players with the team and now return as coaches,” Cal said.

This season, the team will be welcoming former Power player and assistant coach Josh Rebandt as head coach, and possibly two other past players as assistant coaches.

“This part of the job is so exciting for Sherrie and me,” explains Cal. “We love these guys and we enjoy getting to see them again each summer and experience the growth and maturity that has taken place over the years that we’ve known them. We’re really looking forward to the 2013 season and what it will bring – hopefully a third straight playoff spot!”
