Scripture Lesson: Luke 14:7-11

On this date in 1911 Bill Bergin ends his Major League career with the lowest batting average in Major League history for a position player by hitting only .170 during his 11 year career with the Reds and the Superbas (Dodgers). The 33 year old catcher had only one season when he hit over .200 and also holds the record for the lowest single season batting average when in 1909, Bergin hit .139.

In our Scripture lesson today Jesus notices how the people are picking places of honor at the banquet He was attending. So he told a parable in which he tells the hearers that everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and everyone who humbles themselves will be exalted. Jesus wants us not to think more highly of ourselves that we should. He wants us to realize that by living humble lives we will be exalted by God in heaven. It is better to take the lower seat and be invited up in a wedding feast than to take a higher place and be asked to move down.

1. Why should we live a humble life?

2. What happens when we live lives exalting ourselves?

3. Why is it important to keep God in his proper place in our lives?

God can only use us for His work when we have a humble spirit willing to serve others and Him!
