April 1: Tempting

Scripture Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 3:1-5

Today is the birthday of Hall of Fame knuckleballer Phil Niekro. He spent most of his 24-year Major League career with the Atlanta Braves, finishing with 318 wins and a career ERA of 3.25. Niekro’s knuckleball would appear easy to hit as it came slowly toward the plate. It was indeed tempting to try to hit it, but it was harder than it appeared.  Former Dodger and Cub outfielder Rick Monday once said Niekro’s knuckleball “actually giggles at you as it goes by.”

In today’s text, Paul assures the Thessalonians that they will be tempted. Paul was worried about how the Church would hold up under temptation, so he sent Timothy to encourage and strengthen them in their trials. Satan tempts us by making sin look good. He wants nothing more than for us to sin and be separated from God. He is as crafty as a knuckleball. Timothy, by the way, came back with a good report on how the Church was handling temptation.

  1. How are we handling temptation today?

  2. What is Satan using to tempt us to sin?

  3. Why is sin so tempting?

The closer we are to Christ, the harder it is for Satan to tempt us! James says, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” The best way to resist Satan is to draw close to Christ!

There was one woman but she inherited a mess and was gone wihtin weeks.Oh yes, I know. The only woman, too.I think it's refreshing to have Haitian-born Ms. Jean as GG but that's not quite the same.Nowhere near the same, I think. Michaelle Jean isn't the first, there was Clarkson, too. But that's irrelevant, I think. At the end of the day, however, I want someone competent in place, regardless of language, origin, colour, gender or whatever else. We all want competence, but I also want leadership to reflect the population, not some fake version of Canada or US that is mostly white and mostly male. We can't point to Parliament of Congress and say, these are the people, out of everyone in the country, who are most competent for these jobs. There's clearly different opportunities for different people, different ceilings, different expectations. The colour of his skin is far less important than the fact that the man appears to be competent to do the job. This is ridiculous, of course. No one becomes POTUS because they are "competent to do the job". There are a huge series of political machinations and millions of dollars of fundraising that produce two candidates and two candidates only. Those are clearly not the only people competent to do the job. What is most wonderful about Obama is most definitely that he is African-American, because there's really not much else noteworthy. Other than that, he's just another Democrat. Not as bad as the Republicans, but not all that different, either.

he felt as though it prtyraoed Satan as too friendly and lacking in power. He said he wasn't sure how that would play in this area.I loved the portrayal, and felt that Satan is actually a lot more dangerous when we see him as likable . The Bible talks about how he will disguise himself as an angel of light -I would be interested to know how this went over in the different area's of the country. Thanks!

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to
my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed
the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but
I had to tell someone!
