July 10: Respect

Scripture Lesson: 1 Peter 2:17

On this date in 2001, in his final All-Star Game appearance, Cal Ripken, Jr. was named MVP of the game. His home run, along with consecutive homers by Derek Jeter and Magglio Ordonez, powered the American League to a 4-1 victory over the National League. In an ultimate show of respect, starting American League shortstop Alex Rodriguez moved over to third in the bottom of the first inning so that Ripken – who was elected as a third-baseman – could play the position he played for most of his career, shortstop.

In our Scripture lesson today, Peter says we should show proper respect to everyone, love fellow believers, honor the king, and fear God. Showing respect is a key for a believer. Not only should we respect our Heavenly Father, we need to respect those around us each day. One sign of respect is to serve others by giving of ourselves. When we respect others, we will love them and want the very best for them in every aspect of their lives. We will honor them by serving, much as Jesus did by respecting the disciples when He washed their feet at the Last Supper.

  1. What are ways you can respect your coach and teammates?

  2. How are we showing respect by serving others?

  3. How is showing respect being Christ like?

Every player on both teams enjoyed seeing Ripken play shortstop in that All-Star Game, he received the respect of the All-Stars from both teams. Not only does our Heavenly Father deserve respect, but so do the people around us in authority each day.

Great article! It deltniiefy puts things in perspective of how things have changed in just 10 years. I'm a huge Ripken fan and a big reason why was that he played the game because he loved it and he had morals. Ripken got voted in the All Star game one year batting .216. He wasn't happy that he was chosen over more deserving players that year, but he understood that the fans wanted to watch him. He would never miss an oportunity to tell people he was blessed to play this game, yet most players today feel that MLB is blessed to have them. ARod getting suspended for underground poker games, and Jeter sitting out an All Star game for emotional stress. Maybe its just the Yankees, but players have become so self absorbed. Baseball needs another Cal Ripken Jr. Who do you think that can be?
