June 21: Anger

Scripture Lesson: Proverbs 29:11

On this date in 2002, during a New York-Penn League game between the New Jersey Cardinals and the Staten Island Yankees, an angry fan hopped a fence and came onto the field to argue an umpire’s call at first base. The 38-year-old woman, who was charged with disorderly conduct, was at the game with her eight-year-old daughter’s Brownie troop.

The writer of Proverbs offers some very sound wisdom in today’s text. He says a fool lets his anger out while a wise man keeps it under control. Anger can consume us just as a wildfire consumes anything in its path. It flares up quickly, and when we do not keep it in check, anger can cause us to do something we will regret. I can imagine the woman in the story felt terrible afterwards, and wished she had acted more responsibly. As growing disciples of Christ, we should learn to react as Jesus would react. The next time you feel anger rising, remember the lesson of today: a fool vents his anger, but a wise person controls his anger instead of letting anger control him.

  1. Describe the last time in your life anger got out of control.

  2. What would you have done differently if you could go back and change the outcome?

  3. What makes a man wise in dealing with anger?

The more our life is lived like Jesus, the more we react like Him even when we get angry.
