March 21: Be Ready

Scripture Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2

On this date in 1986, the New York Yankees announced that their most celebrated off-season acquisition, 26 year-old pitcher Britt Burns, would miss the entire season because of a chronic deteriorating hip condition. Burns had won 18 games in 1985 for the White Sox, but would never pitch again in the major leagues.

The young church in Thessalonica had many questions about when they could expect Jesus to return: many expected it to happen soon. Today’s verses are Paul’s response. He said that no one can know the time of Christ’s return: the important thing is to be ready at all times. In our day, we still have people who claim to know when time will end. You can be assured that none of them have the answer. None of us can know what the future holds, but we know Who holds the future. We need to live our lives as if Jesus is coming again in the next moment. We need to put our faith and trust in God and live for Him each moment.

  1. Would you sign a player to a long-term contract if you knew he was hurt? Why or why not?

  2. Why do we need to live our lives in readiness for Jesus’ return?

  3. What changes do we need to make in our lives to be ready for His return?

Paul wants us to live our lives in such a way that we don’t worry about when Jesus is returning, but live every second in readiness for Jesus’ return.
