March 28: Fooled

Scripture Lesson: Proverbs 28:26

On this date in 1985, the April 1st issue of Sports Illustrated was released. The issue was designed to play “April Fools” on sports fans, as writer George Plimpton wove a fictitious tale of Sidd Finch, a Mets rookie phenom who threw a 168 mph fastball. Staged photos and quotes from real-life Mets help give the story a realistic edge. Many were fooled!

The writer of Proverbs offers sound wisdom in today’s scripture, stating “He who trusts in himself is a fool.” When we trust in ourselves, we take the place of God. I am not saying that we should not be confident in ourselves. The point the writer is trying to make is simple: it is foolish to think we should be the guiding force in our lives. When we trust in ourselves, we do not trust in God. We make the decisions for our lives. We choose which pathway to take. How foolish is it for a believer not to consult God? Today we must be reminded that our lives as believers are not our own, and neither is the direction of our lives.

  1. When was the last time we did not consult God? How did that turn out?

  2. What holds us back from asking God for direction?

  3. Thank God for always being there for us, ready to guide our lives.

Trust God or trust ourselves, the choice is ours to make every day.
